Community Curatorial Project

Inspired Connections: A Community Curatorial Project
January 25 – February 3, 2013
Opening reception: Saturday January 26 from 2-4 pm

Inspired Connections will give a group of local artists the opportunity to work closely with the gallery’s permanent collection, identifying connections in subject, medium and style that inspire their own artistic methods. Each participant will select a number of pieces from the collection and curate these into a display that also includes their own related work. The artists will learn about the collection and how it is developed and cared for, and about the curatorial process. They will be inspired by the wealth of artwork available.

The GPAG Collection includes over 1500 works of art, many by artists who live or work in the region. There is also a small collection of historic Canadian paintings and drawings and many fine examples of the book arts, printmaking and works on paper. Canadian fine craft and contemporary culture are also represented. Every year we include at least one exhibition drawn primarily from the Permanent Collection in our schedule. We would, however, like to see many more people enjoy these works of art and bringing community members into the vault to develop curatorial projects is one way to make this  happen.

If you would like to know more about being a Community Curator, please contact the Gallery.

January 18th, 2013 at 7pm
Speaker: Devon Smither, PhD candidate in Art at University of Toronto presents "Too Close for Comfort: Realism, Photography and the Nude in Modern Canadian Art"
Hosted by the Grimsby Public Art Gallery in the Periodicals reading room of the Grimsby Public Library.
18 Carnegie Lane, Grimsby, ON

Admission is Free!
Light refreshments will be served

The Art House Café Lecture Series promotes the ideas of young and emerging scholars from regional universities and provides an opportunity for them to present their research through lectures in a Parisian café ambiance that encourages sharing inspiration and cultivating ideas.
The second lecture in this new series will be presented on 18 January 2013 at 7pm by Ms. Devon Smither, a PhD candidate, Department of Art at the University of Toronto. Smither's talk, "Too Close for Comfort: Realism, Photography and the Nude in Modern Canadian Art" will explore the controversy that surrounded the nude genre in Canada in the early twentieth century and address how the influence of photography's realism on painting challenged the genre during the interwar period.

Devon Smither specializes in the study of modern visual culture, with an emphasis on the intersections of gender, modernity and artistic practice in Canada, the United States and Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Smither completed a BA with Distinction at the University of Alberta (2003) and a Master's degree in Art History at the University of British Columbia (2010).

The Art House Café Lecture Series is dedicated to the memory of Pat and Edith Brown.

The Grimsby Public Art Gallery is pleased to acknowledge the partnership of the Grimsby Public Library and the generous sponsorship of the Niagara Neighbourhood New Idea Fund, as well as private donations made in memory of Edith and Pat Brown. The Series is also sponsored by Mrs. Lenore Kummel, Dr. Andy Lam, Dr. Donald G. Smith, Dr. Elizabeth Shoemaker and Phelps Homes Ltd.
