Join us Friday, March 17 for Paul Chartrand, as he presents: Communication Breakdown: The Problematic Ethics of Early Land and Earth Art

Paul's primary motivation is to contribute to the evolving field of environmental art and to encourage discussion around often polemical environmental issues in Canada, such as ecological fragmentation and the ethics of agricultural production.

Paul engages these issues through the construction of sculptural support apparatuses built from carefully chosen and assembled objects, which he then populates with living flora and fauna. Repurposing objects as habitats and conceptual support systems subverts and re-contextualizes them as players in functioning ecosystems. He considers the plants and other natural elements as having agency of their own; shown through their power to change the appearance and effect of the work.

The Grimsby Public Art Gallery’s annual auction, Visions 2017: ArtExpo67 is the gallery’s primary fundraising event. Organized and run by the Volunteer Committee of the Grimsby Public Art Gallery, the auction supports gallery operations, activities and programs. The auction always includes a selection of original works of art and fine craft in a wide range of media and styles. Most of these pieces are generously donated by the people who created them, the artists and artisans in our community.

Submission Criteria

1.   Eligible works include all areas of fine craft and visual art.
2.   Works must be originals and created by the donor.
3.   Deadline for submission is Sunday March 5, 2017.
4.   The artist will be notified of the selection committee’s decision by phone on or before Monday March 13. Any works not selected must be picked up on or before Thursday March 16.
5.   Works should be of modest size (no larger than 30” in any direction and need not be framed)
6.   An artist may submit 1 or 2 works for consideration.
7.   By submitting you agree to the reproduction of photographs of your work for the promotional and marketing efforts of the event.
8.   Return a completed form (see next page) with the work to be considered. 
9.   All artwork must be clearly identified with the name of the artist, the title of the artwork and the medium firmly affixed to the back (or bottom in the case of 3D works).
10. Include title, date, dimensions in inches (H x W [xD]), medium/media and suggested retail price.(Retail Price: must be consistent with current market value. 
Reserve Bids:  will be set at 30% of retail price,.  If, in the opinion of the jury, the retail price is unrealistic, the artist will be contacted and the price reduced with their consent or the artwork returned to the artist.)
11. Include a brief biography (one page max).

Selection & Criteria Process

1.  Selection / Balance of Media – The Auction committee would like to offer a varied selection of media and subject matter in the works that are presented. This, in itself, results in the refusal of some good work. 
2.  The decision of the Selection Committee is final.  No entry may be withdrawn once it has been accepted.

Join us Friday, February 17, at 7pm, for our first speaker, Jordan Pederson as she presents:
Mythmaking and Indigeneity: Critically addressing the myths which failed Tekahionwake Pauline Johnson and Annie Pootoogook.

Questioning whether the representation of Indigenous People in Canada's mainstream media has changed in the last century, this lecture primarily examines the work of Tekahionwake (Pauline Johnson) and Annie Pootoogook alongside media sources and contemporary scholarship. Active participation will be encouraged from the audience, though no previous knowledge is necessary! This is intended to open a space for dialogue and collaboration, while providing resources for future reading and learning about the topic. 

Jordan Pedersen completed her B.A.Hons in December from the University of Guelph with a double major in Studio Art and Philosophy, and will shortly begin a M.I. in Library Science. Her lecture brings together all of these disciplines by combining print culture, visual art and literature in a specifically Canadian context.

On a July day in 1990, a confrontation propelled Native issues in Kanehsatake and the village of Oka, Quebec, into the international spotlight. Director Alanis Obomsawin spent 78 nerve-wracking days and nights filming the armed stand-off between the Mohawks, the Quebec police and the Canadian army. This powerful documentary takes you right into the action of an age-old Aboriginal struggle. The result is a portrait of the people behind the barricades.

Each day will cover new ideas, artists and skills.

Square Roots Project: Final Deadline February 3rd!!

This Friday, February 3rd, is the final DEADLINE for the Canada 150 Square Roots Project!

All artists must have their squares completed and delivered to the Grimsby Public Art Gallery by 4:30 p.m. 

Assembly of the mosaic will begin this coming weekend, so be sure to get your art in on time to be included.
All 150 squares need to be returned to complete the project, please!
