Leon Rooke’s narratives presented herewith are based on figments of Tony Calzetta’s graphic imagination…
The ‘Fabulous Fictions’ project began with an uncommon idea. Artist Tony Calzetta and his printmaker friend Dieter Grund … were looking for a project they could work on together. Tony suggested they collaborate with … novelist Leon Rooke to produce a limited edition livre d’artist. One twist to the project was that, instead of the customary practice of the artist illustrating the writer’s text, they would approach the Fabulous Fictions project the other way round.
Tony presented Leon with a number of small drawings. Leon wrote sketches for nineteen of the images, which artist and author then winnowed down to a select nine ‘Fabulous Fictions’. Tony reworked the original drawings and combined them with Leon’s texts and media that included intaglio, woodcut and digital printing. In addition, one of the drawings and its text, ‘How God Talks in His Sleep’, was re-imagined as an interactive paper sculpture and attached to the front of the slipcase…. Fabulous Fictions comes to Grimsby as part of our regular spring celebration of the book arts. This elaborate and unusual collaboration is sure to intrigue, inspire and above all entertain viewers. First exhibited in 2016 at the Art Gallery of Peel, we thank curator Tom Smart and publisher Tim Inkster of The Porcupine’s Quill for their organizational work and insightful writings. Special recognition also goes to Dieter Grund of Presswork Editions for his role in creating this work.
